Three stacked triangle tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three forearms are shown side by side, each with a small vertical stack of three triangles. The outlines are thin and the filled triangles vary in tone, from solid black to grey and dotted shading. The arms fill the frame against a plain light background, with a watch and bracelets visible at the wrists.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every spring the men of Skerrow Point climbed the cliff path with a bucket of lime wash and a bundle of brushes, and every spring they argued about the third triangle. Three marks stood one above the other on the grey rock below the lamp, a signal for boats coming round the shoals: point up, and the sea would take you. Old Tobias Reid said the top one should be solid, because the top was where the danger lay. His daughter Nell said the bottom should stay hollow, since the bottom was the part a boat could still turn away from.

Nobody listened to Nell until the winter the Morag went missing in the fog. Her skipper had counted on the marks, and he had counted them the wrong way up. Nell took the brush to the cliff herself that April. She filled the top triangle solid, shaded the middle one with a dry stipple of charcoal so its tone faded like weather lifting, and left the bottom as an open outline, so any fisherman could see the sea still had room in it.

The Morag came home the following October with three men aboard and a split mast lashed to her side. Her skipper walked the cliff path before he went to his own door. He stood below the rock a long while, reading the marks from the bottom upward, the way Nell had painted them to be read. Then he pressed his thumb into the wet lime of the hollow triangle, leaving a whorl of white on the grey, so that anyone who came after would know a hand had been there.
