We had never managed that. Meg reached up first, as she always did, and Josie grumbled that she was not last, she was third, and third was a number, not a verdict.

After the funeral we went to a small room above the chemist in Ledbury and had the words written on the insides of our wrists, Sisters, then the number, with a red heart beside each one, because Josie said Dad would have wanted a bit of colour and not something sensible in black. The needle hurt less than the silence that followed it.

That autumn the arguments moved from the trees to the kitchen table. Who had the front bedroom, who got the car, whose turn it was to walk first through the gate. Meg kept insisting the number meant rank. I kept quiet. On the last afternoon of picking we found a pear the wasps had split, and it came apart in three pieces at our feet, one each.

We stood there with our wrists pressed together over the basket, three numbers lined up in the sun, and nobody said who was first.
