Three sunflowers across a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Three sunflowers sit side by side in a band across the inner wrist, with the largest in the centre and smaller flowers on either side. The petals are outlined in black and shaded in yellow and orange, and the centres are dark brown with soft shading. The tattoo fills the middle of the frame against plain skin, with a hand and red nails visible below.

Dear Nell,

The sunflowers came up on the Tuesday, three of them, stood shoulder to shoulder against the back wall of Seaview like the Pritchard girls waiting outside chapel. I planted the seeds in April out of spite, if I'm honest. Mr Venn said the salt wind would finish off anything with a face to it, and I wanted to prove him wrong before the first lodgers arrived.
They've grown taller than the coal shed now. The biggest sits in the middle, and the gulls keep landing on its rim to get a look at the sea. Each morning I carry the bread tray out and find they've turned in the night, every head bowed toward the water as if someone had called their names. Mrs Pardoe in room four says they look like a row of brass pans nobody has bothered to polish, and I told her that was the unkindest thing I've heard all summer.
Last week a telegram came for Room Two. The lodger was a quiet man from Leeds who had paid for three weeks and stayed eleven days. He walked down to the front on the Friday with a folded newspaper and didn't come back for supper. I found his key on the hall table with a note beneath it asking me to keep the flowers watered. I've done that every evening since, with the rain can, and I've been talking to them the way Dad used to talk to his marrows.
The petals are browning at the edges now, and the centre of the big one has gone dark as a wet penny. Come up before the month is out if you can. We'll cut the heads off together and dry the seeds on the back step, and you can tell me what I ought to do with the key.
Love, Ada
