The heifer had been labouring since before light, and when I finally came in from the top field Uncle Rhys was sitting on an upturned feed bin, reading the almanac by a torch wedged in a bucket. He didn't look up. He had his finger under the line for January, tracing three little signs down the margin like a man checking a bank statement.

'Taurus,' he said, tapping the bull's horns. 'That's our sign on the deeds, Bethan. Born under the bull, stubborn as one.' He flicked the page. 'And Pisces, the fish, for the flood that drowned the lower meadow in October. Water-bearer for the rain that won't stop. Every one of them a reason to give up.' I told him the stars had never once pulled a calf out of a cow. A jay feather lay on the straw by my boot, grey at the tip and soft as breath, the sort that drifts through the gaps in the barn door in January and settles where nobody sees it.

The calf came at midnight, small and slick, and didn't breathe. We rubbed it with sacking, Rhys swearing softly at the cold, until a shudder ran through its ribs and it coughed like an old man. I stayed on my knees in the straw with my hands gone numb and watched its head lift toward the lamp.

Later, Rhys closed the almanac and slid the feather between the pages, marking the winter he still had to get through. 'Pisces, Aquarius, Taurus,' he said, as if reading out a list of debts. 'Shall we call her Feather?' The heifer lowed from the far pen, and I laughed for the first time all day.
