Tiny bird tattoo on inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a cream cardigan and pale blue denim shirt sits holding a cigarette, with her face out of frame. A very small, single-needle black fine line mark, resembling a bird or arrow, sits on the inner forearm close to the wrist. The soft-focus background and muted tones keep attention on the tattoo and hands.

Dear Nell,

The trough has been frozen solid since Tuesday, so every morning I break the lid of ice with the hoof pick, the way you used to when you thought it was your job. Father has sold the last of the ewes to Hollis at Carrow, and the barn is quiet enough now that I can hear the kitchen clock from the yard. He does not say much about it. He just oils the gate hinges twice a day, as if the gate might argue.
Something has been working the lower field. Yesterday, when I went to fetch the feed bucket, a snipe got up out of the flooded ditch by the willows, straight up and then sharply down again, and I stood there with the bucket going numb in my hand. Grandad used to say they are harder to hit than a fox, and that a man who shoots one deserves the mud he falls in. I did not think about the gun at all. It was only a small brown bird with a beak like a darning needle, flying low towards the road as if someone had pulled a thread through the hedge.
That was not the end of it, though. This morning there was a single grey feather on the frost by the lower gate, pointed at both ends, lying exactly where the bird must have been standing. I have pressed it in the back of the almanac for you. When you come up at New Year, hold it against the window and tell me whether it is a bird or only the shape of one that flew off in the wrong direction.
Love, Ruth
