Tipi, log cabin and igloo stacked on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A vertical stack of three small dwellings, a tipi at the top, a log cabin in the middle and an igloo at the base, with short radiating lines above the tipi. The words HOME SWEET HOME sit in block capitals beneath the igloo. Bold outlines are filled with stippled dots and hatching in black ink on pale skin, with a blurred indoor background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruddock drew the three houses on the back of a bill of lading the week we left Aberdeen, a tipi at the top with its little rays of sun, a log cabin in the middle, an igloo at the foot. He said a man could live in any of them so long as he kept the stove lit. I told him the stove was the ship's business, not his, and he laughed and tucked the paper into the flour bin where the damp couldn't reach it.

By the Denmark Strait the galley was the only warm room aboard. The range ran hot and sulky, the pots slid across the steel top whenever she rolled, and I learned to brace my hip against the rail and stir with one hand. Ruddock took to his bunk with a fever on the fourth night, so the crew of nineteen came to me for supper. I made lentils and dumplings and far too much tea, and the men sat on the lockers with their boots still wet and watched me as if I were conjuring something out of the pans.

When the bread was baked I went looking for the paper and found it in the flour, soft at the corners. Under the igloo Ruddock had printed the words in capitals and underlined them twice, as if I might argue with him. I didn't argue. I carried the last bowl up the ladder to his bunk, and he looked at the broth, then at me, and said it was the first proper home he'd had in a month.

He turned to the bulkhead and closed his eyes. Behind me the stove ticked and settled, warm as any cabin in the hills.
