Small cactus in a pot on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a round cactus in a plant pot sits on the ankle. The cactus has green shading with dark outlines and a small flower on top, while the pot is drawn in black linework with a single horizontal band. The image is a close, well-lit shot against a plain pale background with the foot resting on a white sock.

The frost had come down hard on the Cwm the week the lambs were due, and Nell Harcourt carried the cactus in from the cold porch and set it on the kitchen sill where the lamp would reach it. It was no bigger than a hen's egg, round and green and ribbed like a knitted glove, and it sat in a black pot with one band painted round its middle. The pedlar had left it with her mother the year the bridge washed away, and nobody on the farm had ever found a use for it except to look at.

Her husband Ifor had said plants were for people with time, and the farm had none. He said it again when the snow shut the lane and the hay ran short and the ewes started coming early in the shed. Nell said nothing. She went out at first light with the lantern, counted the lambs, came back, and turned the pot a quarter so the thin side faced the window. Every morning she checked the soil with one knuckle, the way her mother had taught her, and gave it a spoon of water warmed on the range.
On the fourteenth night of January the cactus put out a flower. It was small and yellow and stood on top of the green like a candle somebody had lit by mistake. Ifor came in from the shed, stamping snow off his boots, and stopped in the doorway with his hat in his hands. He looked at the flower for a long time and then he looked at the pot.
"Well," he said. "Put it in the window, then. Let the lane see."
