Four black line symbols in a row
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Four simple black line symbols sit side by side on the skin: a stick-like figure on a curved line, a house-like shape with a tall attached form, a tent-like frame on splayed legs, and a striped cone shape. The lines are uniform and slightly uneven, with no shading, and the ink is entirely black on a warm skin tone. A striped fabric edge runs along the bottom of the frame, and the body location is not clear from the image.

You learn the marks before the names, because the names drowned with the old towns. Your grandmother Oonagh chalked them on the back wall of the pump house every Sunday while the gulls argued over the bins. First came the stick figure riding its curved line, which means someone who went out past the breakwater and came home. Then the house with its tall chimney arm, which means a hearth you can still reach. Then the frame on splayed legs, a camp where the rain cannot find you.

The last one she saved for the end of each lesson. The striped cone was the mark for the lighthouse at Scarrow Point, its red and white bands gone grey, where the salt bell still rings when the wind swings round from the north. She made you say the whole sequence aloud, four sounds that were never words, and then she rubbed the wall clean with her sleeve so nobody else could read the way.
Last spring you walked it alone for the first time, with a stub of chalk in your coat pocket and the sequence in your mouth. At the frame on splayed legs you stopped and drew a small circle beside it, a mark Oonagh never taught you. You did not yet know what it meant. You only knew you wanted whoever came after you to find the way back.
