A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third umbrella that morning came back with its ribs bent the wrong way, and Ruth Pennock stood under the awning of the fish stall, turning it over in the drizzle, trying to decide whether it was worth the mending. Calder Lane market had been wet since six. Stallholders had stopped calling out prices and simply held up their wares, dripping, and waited for custom that would not come.

Then, between the cabbage crates and the cobbler's trestle, something grey and round was standing very still. It had ears like folded leaves, whiskers that caught the light, and a belly as pale as a dinner plate. It held no umbrella of its own. It was simply waiting, the way a bus waits, with its small eyes fixed on the rain.

Ruth had seen its like once, years back, on a walk up through the beech woods above the town, and she had never told anyone because nobody would have believed her. She lifted the purple umbrella from the stack, the only one with its canopy still whole, and held it out across the cobbles. The creature considered this seriously. Then it took the handle in both paws, and the rain slid off its back as though it had never been wet at all.

Next morning the purple umbrella was back on her trestle, folded neatly, with a dry patch beneath it and three acorns caught in the spokes. Ruth sold the bent one to a boy for twenty pence and watched him wander off into the grey. Up on the hill, a pale shape was moving through the trees, and she could just make out a small purple canopy above it, tilting carefully against the wind.
