Eeyore donkey tattoo on the thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon donkey Eeyore seated, facing the viewer, with a tail that ends in a pink bow. The bold outlines are smooth and the body is shaded with soft gradients of blue, lilac and purple, with lighter highlights on the muzzle and belly. It sits centrally on the outer thigh against plain pale skin, with a blurred floor visible at the lower edge.

The donkey has sat on the third shelf of lost property at Thornbury Road station since March, and nobody has come for him. You are the one who signs for things, so every morning you look him in his blue face and write "one soft toy, lilac and blue, tail with pink bow, condition: sulking" in the ledger. He does not look up. He never looks up. He sits with his front legs folded and his ears hanging either side of his head like wet flannels, and he gives the impression that nothing in this building was ever going to go well for him.

Then, on a Tuesday when the 6.14 was cancelled and the platform was full of people wanting to shout at somebody, a boy in a school blazer leans on the hatch. His little brother left a toy on the Leeds train, he says. You ask what it looks like. "A donkey," the boy says. "He's a bit down." You tell him you know the feeling. He laughs, a short surprised sound, and you realise you have been waiting all day for someone to say something that true across that counter.

You lift the donkey down from the shelf. He is lighter than you expected and smells faintly of crisps. You straighten the pink bow on his tail with one fingertip, fill in the form, and slide him under the hatch with the pen. The boy's name goes in the box marked collected by. Nobody signs anything else.

As the boy walks off towards the stairs, you see the donkey's tail give one small, reluctant wag. You decide not to mention it in the ledger.
