Totoro silhouette with umbrella on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a dark silhouette of a large forest spirit with rounded ears and two pale eyes, with a smaller figure beneath an umbrella standing at its base. Trees are rendered in lighter and darker blues and teal, framing the central shapes. The design uses solid blue fills with soft shading and is shown on the outer upper arm in a photo with a plain background.

Dear Marjorie,

The 6.10 was cancelled again, so I have had an hour on the bench outside the signal box to think about the wood behind the platform. You asked me last month whether I had really seen the creature by the old pines, or whether the rain had got into my head. I have decided to answer you properly, since Mr Pryce has finally stopped asking me to sweep the waiting room.

It was the night the lamps failed at Hollin Halt. Mr Pryce had gone home with his chest, and I was walking the line with a torch that kept dying on me. Between the third and fourth posts the trees stood so close their branches met over the cinders. Something was sitting in the gap where the path bends, as big as a haystack and blue-grey as the inside of a mussel shell. Two pale eyes caught my torch beam. Its ears rose like the handles of a bread tin.

I should have run. Instead I opened my black umbrella, the one with the bent spoke you always tease me about, and held it over the wet step by the lineside hut, because that was where I had left the oil can. The creature looked at the umbrella, then at me, then at the umbrella again, and lowered its great head as if it were being polite to a guest. A smaller shape stood at its feet, holding the hem of its coat, and neither of them made a sound.

When the signal came back green at dawn, the lamp was burning and the oil can was full to the brim. Beside the hut lay a single acorn, damp and clean, and a small wet footprint led back into the trees. I have kept the acorn in my purse. Come up at Christmas and I will show you. Mind the third step, it is still slippery.

Yours, Edith
