The swallows had left the cart shed by the second week of October, and Ruth only noticed when the morning stopped chattering under the eaves. She stood in the yard with frost on the churn lids and looked up at the empty mud cup stuck to the beam. Her father used to say a swallow that lingered late had a poor sense of direction, and he would have shaken his head at her for missing the going.

The tin turned up in January, when she was clearing the loft to make room for hay that would not last till spring. Inside lay a sheaf of old flash sheets gone soft as cloth, the outlines pricked with pin holes where someone had traced them. Among the hearts and roses was a swallow with a ribbon curled beneath it, LOVE ALWAYS in careful capitals, and a pencil note in the margin that read only: ask Mick Harte, he'll do it for a pint.

She pinned the sheet to the beam where the nest had been, using two tacks from the tack room and a lump of old putty. The cold got into her fingers while she worked, and the paper curled at one corner like a dog's ear. She told herself it was only so the bare wood had something to look at. Nobody was there to ask her why she bothered, and the rain kept the shed too damp for anything but mice.

In April the swallows came back up the valley, their wings black as ink and twice as quick. Ruth heard them before she saw them, a rattle of wings at the open door, and then one bird dropped onto the beam and began to build against the paper. It packed mud across the ribbon until LOVE ALWAYS was lost under it. Ruth left it alone and went back out to the calves.
