Traditional heart with New York banner

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A red and orange heart sits behind a cream banner that reads NEW YORK, with two yellow flowers and green leaves on either side. The design uses bold black outlines with soft shading in the heart and banner. The tattoo is photographed close up on a pale arm, with a wooden floor and studio equipment blurred in the background.

Dear Mamma, the boat did not sink, though the cook in the Pier 9 canteen tried his best with the soup. I am writing this on the back of a dock slip because the stationer on Atlantic Avenue was shut for the feast, and Mr Greco says a son should write to his mother even if she has to ask Father Benedetto to read it aloud.

You asked why I came home from the Bowery with a heart inked on me and the name of this city in cream letters across it. Sully, the fellow who keeps the shop by the bread ovens, drew it in one evening while the radio told us the Yankees were losing again. He said a heart without a banner is only a bit of meat, and a banner without a heart is a sign for a laundry. So he gave me both, with two yellow flowers to keep the peace between them. I told him you would say the flowers were too cheerful for a sailor. He said the flowers were for the sailor's mother, and charged me a dollar less.

Next month the ship goes to Naples. I will walk down the gangplank where you can see me from the harbour wall, and I will not pretend the city is not behind me. Keep the drawing I enclosed. Pin it by the stove where the light falls in the afternoons. When the wind comes off the water, look at the red and the cream and know that the banner names the place I left from, and that every letter I post will be written with the same ink that is holding that heart together.

Your son, Salvatore
