Traditional roses across the lower torso
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
Three roses with peach and yellow petals sit in a row across the lower torso, with a central bloom flanked by two partly visible buds. Bold black outlines define the petals and the dark green leaves, which are shaded with simple flat tones. The soft peach and green colours stand out against the pale skin, and the arrangement follows the curve of the waistline above a dark waistband.

She carried a pair of snips in her apron pocket and cut nothing until the parson asked.

Her son Walter drove the carrier's cart to the Thursday market with eggs packed in straw and buckets of cut flowers roped to the tailboard. He sold the roses first, because town folk paid more for something that had come off a village wall. One October he came back with the cart empty and the reins wrapped twice around his fist. A man in a grey coat had bought every bloom and paid in brass buttons, then asked him where the middle rose grew, the one nobody cut.
Nobody had cut it, that was the trouble. His mother had let it stand since the spring his father went down the pit at Lowmoor and did not come up, saying it would open when it was ready and not before. Walter climbed the wall that night with a lantern. The bud had split open to the frost, its edges gone dark, and he could not bring himself to snip it. He sat on the coping until the bells for matins, and when he came down his hands smelled of crushed leaves and cold.
The man in the grey coat never returned to the market. In the spring the middle rose came up again, peach at the heart and yellow at the rim, and the baker's wife stood at the wall with her apron full of crumbs for the sparrows and let it be.
