Traditional-style hand and wrist tattoo
Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A man's hand and wrist are shown, with a bold tattoo across the back of the hand and up onto the forearm, partly covered by a striped shirt cuff. The design uses dark outlines with red and green colour, and includes a fist-like form and a band of lettering that is not fully legible. The warm, slightly soft photo is framed tightly on the hand against a tan suit jacket and black tie.

The ship's cook had sewn the last of the canvas bags by lamplight, and the bosun was still cursing the squall that had taken the jib when Eamon Dunphy came up the forecastle ladder with his sleeve rolled to the elbow. Nobody asked him to hold still. He held his hand out flat on the rail anyway, so the men could see what the Lizzie Carr's new owner had paid for in Liverpool.

It was a fist, red as a mooring buoy, with a banner curling beneath it. The lettering had blurred already where the salt water got under the skin. Old Tobin said it spelled a girl's name. Dunphy said it spelled a debt, and laughed, and nobody laughed with him.
Three nights later the Lizzie Carr ran onto the Kish with her hold half full of Madeira wine. The cargo was lost, and so was the bosun, but Dunphy came ashore on a spar with his right hand still gripping the rope that had hauled him there, the knuckles white and the red fist beaten dark by the cold. The doctor in Dún Laoghaire cut the cuff of his shirt away to look at it, and found the banner had cracked across the middle, so the word that remained read only half of what he'd paid for.
