Traditional tiger head with roses on neck
Traditional · Neck · Colour · Photo
A snarling tiger head with bared teeth, orange fur, grey muzzle and yellow eyes fills the centre of the neck. Bold black outlines and solid shading define the fur, and red roses with green leaves sit on either side. The image is a close crop of the neck and upper chest, with the wearer's face not shown.

Thirty years after they left Carrick Street School, the class of 1989 met in the Legion hall with a tombola and a tray of sandwiches curling at the edges. Nobody could agree who had been the bully and who the bullied, so somebody told the old story instead, the one about the tiger in the boiler room.

The tiger, the old ones say, was painted by Stanley Bull, the caretaker, who mixed his orange gloss from a tin he begged off the council depot and used a brush made from his own grey hair. He painted it on the boiler room wall the winter the Ormerod girl stopped coming to assembly. Roses climbed the pipes around it, red as a grazed knee. Whoever was cruel in that school was seen by the tiger, and its yellow eyes grew brighter for every name they had called.
At the reunion, Jean Harker, who had once locked Ruth Ormerod in the cloakroom for an afternoon, sat by the urn with a paper plate balanced on her knee. The lights dipped. Somebody's phone lit the ceiling. Then a sound came up through the floorboards, a long low breath, and the tiger walked out between the trestle tables with its grey muzzle wet and its teeth bared, a rose leaf stuck to its ruff.
It did not touch anyone. It stopped in front of Jean and sat, its tail sweeping the parquet. Ruth, who now ran the bakery on Mill Row, stood up, broke a bun in half and held it out with a hand that did not shake. The tiger took it gently. Then it turned and went back under the stage, and where it had lain there was a single red petal on the floor. Jean picked it up and kept it in her purse.
