Interlocking hearts on a wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of two overlapping heart outlines sits on the wrist, with the fingers and green nail polish visible at the top of the frame. The thin, single-weight black linework forms one heart over a second, slightly offset heart, with no shading. The plain pale skin and soft background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The snow came down sideways once we passed the old toll hut, and by the time we reached the col I could not see Doro's boots, only the red rope running from her waist to mine. She had insisted on the long way round, past the frozen tarn where her father once lost a mule. Nobody argues with Doro about a route. She says the mountains are only lines drawn on a map by people who never got cold.

We stopped in the lee of a boulder to share the last of the bread. Doro pulled out the tin where she keeps her pencil stub and the folded letter from the valley post office, and she drew on the back of it while I chewed. Two loops, one sitting over the other, the way the ropes crossed at the hut door where our mothers hung the washing. 'That's us,' she said. 'Lean in and you'll see where one begins.'
I told her it looked like a bad knot. She said that was the point of a good one: nobody could find the end of it once it was pulled tight.
We reached the far side at dusk, the cloud tearing open just enough to show the lamps of the village below. Doro untied herself first, then me, and she took my wrist and turned it over in the blue light. Then she pressed the stub of pencil to my skin and went over the drawing again, slowly, so that I would not lose it on the descent.
