Tomas had the van's radiator hissing by the time the sun dropped behind the mesa, and Wren was already out on the cracked shoulder of the Sand Road with her guitar case open on the tarmac, tuning by ear to a song that existed only in her head. He watched her from the driver's seat, the window down, the air smelling of hot brake dust and creosote. She'd promised the petrol station at Tolland they'd be there by seven. It was past nine.

She didn't look up when he got out. "Listen," she said, and struck a single string, then another, bending the pitch down until it wobbled against the first. "Dead flat. Like the sign back there." The sign had read WATER 40 MILES, and someone had painted a treble clef beneath it in the same black as the road markings, a little curl of music nobody had asked for. Tomas had thought it daft. Wren had stopped the van beside it and sat with her palm on the glass for a full minute.

They fixed the radiator with a jerrycan and a tea towel. Then, in the last of the light, Wren handed him a pencil and asked him to draw what he'd seen, and he sketched the clef from the sign, loop and tail and the round belly around the spine. She pressed her thumb into the middle of it so the lead smudged into a heart. "That's the note," she said. "The one you can't play on anything. You only hear it when the road's quiet."

They reached Tolland at half past eleven. The man at the till sold them two bottles of water and a stub of chalk. Outside, under the fluorescent hum, Wren drew the clef on the concrete step in white, and Tomas, who could not read a note of music, traced the curve of the heart with one careful finger while the chalk dust settled on his boots.
