Matching sisters infinity heart ankle tattoos
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two people's ankles and heels show matching black outline tattoos of an infinity symbol forming a heart, with the word sisters written in script inside each one. The linework is bold and even, in solid black ink with no colour. The tattoos sit side by side on the back of each ankle, with the feet angled towards the camera against a tiled floor.

The ink had been settling on Nell's ankle for three days when Dot asked, for the fourth time, whether the heart was crooked. Nell said it wasn't, and bent to look anyway, the way you check a lock you already know is shut. Behind them the Marrow Lark nudged against the bollards at Hythe Lock, her tarred hull groaning like a door that wanted oiling, and a moorhen picked its way along the gunwale as if it had paid for a berth.

Their father had left them the boat and a debt of four hundred pounds, and between them they had agreed on exactly one thing, which was that they would not sell. Dot wanted the stove fixed and the cabin painted. Nell wanted to keep moving, Oxford to the Trent and back, counting lock fees out in coins on the roof. The lock-keeper, Arthur Pim, had watched them argue at every gate since March and had given up refereeing. 'Round and round,' he said, nodding at the two of them. 'Never gets anywhere, that sort of symbol. Mind you, it never gets lost either.'
The gates groaned open and the water dropped beneath them, slow and green, until the Lark sat low enough to show the brickwork streaked with old weed. Dot went ahead with the windlass to fix the bottom gate. Nell stayed at the tiller and watched her sister's back, straight and certain against the grey stone, and thought about the word they had both chosen without consulting each other, inked small and black on bone. At the next bridge they swapped without a word, the way they always did, and the boat drifted on under two pairs of hands, neither of them steering it alone.
