The lock-keeper at Hungerford would not open the gate until Nell Parrish had chalked her three marks on the beam. She always did it the same way: a triangle standing on its point, a second sitting inside it, and a third that touched both at their corners. Her father had taught her that the river could not follow a straight line, only shapes that closed, and that a bargeman who trusted anything else would end up sitting on a sandbank with the kettle cold.

That spring the water came brown off the hills and the barge Cormorant sat low in the cut, loaded with slate for Reading. Below Kintbury the towpath vanished under a sheet of brown water, and the grey horse would not step onto it. Nell did not shout. She walked the horse back up the bank and looked at the land the way her father had taught her, finding three points she could trust: a willow stump, a fence post with a crow on it, and an iron ring set in the old mooring wall. She walked the line between them, and the ground held.

Tobias, the boy she had taken on that winter, watched her take the horse across the flood one step at a time. When they were tied off on the far side he asked her why three points and not four, since four would hold a deal more. Nell told him that four points would only argue about which one was loosest. Three never argued.

He took the chalk from her pocket without being asked and drew the third mark on the lock beam himself, its corners a little crooked. The gate groaned open. Nell did not look back, but she heard him say the shapes out loud under his breath as the barge slid through, three points and no argument.
