Forearm · Colour · Photo

Below them sits a gold metallic temporary tattoo of two scallop shells inside outlined circles, joined by a small disc. The shells are rendered in fine radial lines against a blurred green background.

The keeper's wife on Gannet Head had a rule about shells: none came up the stairs. The lamp room was for glass and brass and nothing that might hold water, because damp got into the mechanism and the mechanism had to turn all night. He was a stubborn child, and he sat on the step with them until the light came on. Then he heard a bell on the rocks below, a sound no one had rung in twenty years, and he went down with a lamp of his own.

Out past the skerry a small boat was turning in circles, its sail slack. A man stood in the stern holding a disc of gold that caught the beam and threw it back in rings. He was looking for the harbour mouth and could not find it, because the lamp had been dark too long and the sea had forgotten the way.

The boy walked to the water's edge and laid his scallops along the rocks, ridge to ridge, the way his mother had taught him to lay out a path. One by one the shells rang, and the sound ran out across the water like a chain paid out. The man turned toward it. By dawn the boat was tied up at the pier, and the keeper's wife found the step bare and her son asleep among the wet weed, with a gold coin in his fist that had not been there the night before.
