Twin moon tattoos on the wrists
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are raised with palms turned inwards, showing a full moon tattoo on each wrist. The moons are shaded in black and grey with fine detail in the surface craters and soft highlights. The pale, plain background keeps the focus on the two matching tattoos.

Dear Nell, the band at the Marina Ballroom has given up on the waltz and gone back to the foxtrot, so I'm writing this on the back of a programme while Mr Okafor counts the float. The full moon has been hanging over the pier all week like a dropped penny, and Doris at the cloakroom swears it's bigger than it was in June.

You'll remember Stanley Pike, who taught the Tuesday class and had hands like a pair of coal shovels. He danced with me every Friday for three years and never once looked up. Last night he stopped mid-turn, pointed through the high windows and said the dark patches on the moon were old seas, long dried up, and that the men who named them had been wrong about nearly everything except the shapes. Then he laughed, said he'd only read it in a library book, and asked if I wanted a lemonade.
We walked the length of the promenade after closing with the tide out and the sand shining like tin. At the steps he stopped, held up his two hands in the lamplight and turned them over slowly, as if he were checking for rain. I didn't know what I was looking for until I saw the faint grey roundness on each wrist, two little moons that matched. He said his mother had them done before she married, and that he'd never worked out whether she meant them as a promise or a warning.
I'm taking the library book back on Monday, so I'll find out which. The page is folded down at the picture of the moon, and he's written a single word in the margin in pencil. Come up on Sunday and read it with me, love, before the moon goes thin.
