Two calf tattoos side by side: a dark silhouette of a figure beside a chimney skyline with orange shading and the words Step in Time, and a silhouette of a figure holding an umbrella with blue shading

Two calf tattoos of silhouettes with lettering

Other · Colour · Photo

The left calf shows a solid black silhouette of a figure raising a brush above a city skyline with chimneys, outlined in pale white and surrounded by soft orange and yellow shading. The right calf shows a black silhouette of a figure holding an umbrella and a carpet bag, set against a soft blue wash, with the words Just a spoonful of sugar curving around it. The two designs are framed by lettering and use bold silhouette shapes with gentle colour fades rather than fine detail.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Parrish had been up the Hartley chimney since before breakfast, brush held high above her head like a torch, bellowing down the flue that the draught was all wrong, when the umbrella came bobbing up the street against the wind. It was black, and so was the coat beneath it, and the woman under it carried a carpet bag as though it held the weather itself.

"You'll want to come down before you take the roof with you," the woman said, not loudly, and Nell came down, because soot was in her teeth and she had no answer ready. The house had buried four governesses since Easter. The newcomer set her bag on the scullery step, opened it, and drew out a tin of blacking, a folded map of the chimney pots along Coppice Row, and a wooden spoon she claimed was for stirring tea that had gone cold.

By supper the Hartley children were scrubbing the grate themselves and singing the names of the chimney pots in the wrong key. Nell sat on the back step with her knees up, watching the lamps come on along the rooftops, and she found she was not in the least surprised when the umbrella rose over the gutters in the dusk, turned once against the sky, and went off towards the next street to find someone else's mess.
