The rain had stopped, but the track was still a river, and Tuli would not take the long way round the donga. "Your legs are shorter," said Ombu, which was the wrong thing to say to a cub who had been sulking since sunrise. He splashed straight through the middle, sending a spray of red mud up over his brother's chest, and shouted that the rock at the top of the ridge was his by right.

The rock was where the old lioness dozed in the afternoon heat, one eye open for the vultures and the other shut for nobody. Whoever touched the flat stone first would get the grasshoppers in the long grass below, and there were a great many grasshoppers. They scrambled up in a tangle of elbows and tails, tumbling back twice, until Ombu's back paw slipped on a wet root and he landed in a heap with his tongue out and his ears flat with laughter.

Tuli reached the top and stood there, tail high, waiting for the cheer that did not come. The old lioness opened her good eye, looked at the two of them for a long, unbothered moment, and yawned. Then she rolled over and went back to sleep, as if she had seen this race every rainy season since the cubs were born.

Tuli sat down on the warm stone and nudged a space beside him. Ombu climbed up and curled his paws under his chest, and they watched the grasshoppers jump in the grass below, their two shadows lying across the rock exactly the same length.
