Jake and Finn cartoon tattoos on forearms

Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two arms are shown side by side, each with a cartoon character tattoo on the forearm. The character on the left is Jake the dog in yellow-orange with a black outline, and the one on the right is Finn the human in a blue shirt and white hat. The bold, flat linework and solid colour fills sit on a plain skin background with a blurred backdrop behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Jake had been stretched across the lower branch of the Pelham orchard since breakfast, one arm looped round a bough and the rest of him hanging like wet washing. "Finn, you have to see this," he called, which was how every disaster began in the Pelham orchard.

Finn came crashing through the windfalls with his white hat over one eye and his boots squelching in the late-August mud. The Bramleys had split their skins, and the wasps were drunk on the juice. Beyond the old wall, the river ran brown and lazy, and somewhere past it the parish bell was ringing for a wedding nobody in the village had been invited to.

Jake pointed upward. In the crook of the highest tree sat a single russet apple, polished like a conker, the last one the frost had spared. Finn swore he could reach it. Jake, who was four times as bendy and twice as stubborn, said he would reach it first. They argued until the sun slid behind the hop kiln, each insisting the apple was rightfully his, and then agreed to share it, which neither of them had meant.

In the end Jake stretched his long arm up and up while Finn climbed onto his shoulders, and between them they plucked the russet free. They sat on the wall and split it in two. It tasted of rain and stolen sunshine. "Same time next year?" Finn asked, and Jake, mouth full, nodded so hard his ears flapped.
