Two cartoon cats on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo shows two cartoon cats sitting side by side. The cat on the left is a solid black silhouette with a curled tail, while the cat on the right is drawn in thin outline with simple internal detail and a curved tail. The black and grey photograph is taken close up against a blurred background, with the tattoo centred on the lower leg.

You arrive at Brinley House on the wrong day, a wet Tuesday in February, with a suitcase that has one working wheel. Mrs Gorse, the landlady, says the rooms are full, but the windowsill in the hall is not, and on it sit two cats who have plainly settled the matter between themselves. Morwenna is black as a coal scuttle, all solid shape and no argument. Her companion, Dumpling, is pale and drawn in a single thin line, as if the painter ran out of ink before she could be finished.

Dumpling does the talking for both of them. Each morning she takes the empty chair at the breakfast table and reads the Western Morning News upside down, while Morwenna sits beside her with her tail wrapped round her feet, saying nothing. Mrs Gorse says they came with the house. The guests say they came with the sea air. You suspect nobody has ever tried to move either of them, because shifting one would mean stepping round the other.
On your last night the hall lights fail and you find them waiting on the stairs, Dumpling's outline faintly visible in the glow of your phone. She leads you to the cellar door, which has stuck since before the war, and Morwenna butts it once with her shoulder. It gives. Inside, among mismatched teacups, sits a brass key with a card tied to it that reads: for the room that is never empty.
Back in the hall you go to say goodbye. Morwenna blinks slowly. Dumpling considers you over the edge of the newspaper, then shuffles an inch along the sill, and the gap she leaves is exactly the width of a guest who has decided to stay.
