Cartoon pin-up tattoo on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of an orange-haired cartoon woman in a black corset and stockings, seated in a pose and holding a small glass to her lips. The figure has bold dark outlines with flat fills and some shading on the corset, stockings and skin. A red and yellow rose sits at the lower left, with part of another tattoo at the left edge, on a hairy lower leg against a wooden floor.

Dear Mr Hollis,

The ferry came in on Tuesday with the post and a boatload of sunburnt walkers, and not one of them has noticed that I am drawn in heavy black ink and cannot leave the harbour wall. I have sat on the stool at the Gull and Lantern for eleven years now, stockings crossed, a small gin raised to my lips, and the fishermen tell me I bring good luck. Mostly I bring a view of the sea and a draught from the door.
Last month a boy from the cannery painted a red rose with a yellow heart on the wall beside me, and I thought that would be the end of my troubles. Instead the petals grow a little further each night. This morning they reached the cat who sleeps under the bar, and Nell says the cat has started keeping a ledger of who owes what. I have asked it politely to stop. It has only stared, the way cats do when they are sure of the last word.
The real problem is the glass. You shaded it so the gin catches the light, which was generous of you, but the flat fills mean I cannot tip it without the whole bar seeing the outline bend. Last Thursday a sailor ordered a double for me and left a shilling on the counter, and I could do nothing but hold it there, smiling my one smile, while the tide came up over the step.
So please, when you next visit, draw me a door. Not a grand one, just a plain plank with a latch that lifts from the inside. I will leave the glass on the sill, tip it back over my shoulder, and walk out past the rose without a word to the cat.
Yours, as ever, Marjorie Pell
