Cartoon character with moth wings on a leg

Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a round-headed cartoon character with blond hair, wide eyes and a white shirt with small coloured dots, set in the centre of large patterned wings. The wings have bold black outlines and shading in yellow, green, orange and pink, with a soft blended finish. A yellow rose stem, a black swirl and a sunflower-like flower sit around the figure on the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moths came to the fourth-floor windows every night around two, pale ones first, then the big mottled kind that looked hand-painted, and Gordon from days swore they were the same moths coming back up from the car park. I was the night porter, so I had a mop, a key to the sluice and no say in any of it. Mrs Pryce in bay six had a grandson called Alfie who drew on the backs of observation charts while he waited for his tablets. He had drawn a round-headed boy with a cowlick and a shirt speckled with dots, and pinned him in the middle of a pair of wings he'd copied off the glass.

He asked me to hold the chart up to the strip light when the moths gathered, so he could see whether the colours showed through. They did. The yellow came up first, then the green, then an orange like a fox's coat, and the pink he'd shaded at the edges looked wet. "They're not for looking at," he said. "They're for getting out of here." I told him the wings were a good drawing and that nobody was getting out before the discharge team had their say.

On the last night of his stay the window was open a crack for the warm air, and the chart lifted off the sill in a draught. I caught it against my chest. Alfie laughed so hard the monitor beeped, and a nurse came down the corridor to tell us both to settle.

In the morning the drawing was pinned above the sink in bay six, and there was a faint dusty mark on the sill where something had sat all night, waiting its turn at the light.
