Two cats and flowers on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A tattoo of two cats, one orange and white with a blue headband and one grey with a blue bow, rests among pink, purple and blue flowers. A grey butterfly sits above the cats, and a gold scrollwork ornament sits below the flowers. The linework is bold with soft shading, and the colour is vivid against the pale skin, with grey shadow flowers behind the main design.

Dear Jean,

You will not believe what Biscuit did on Tuesday. I came back from the Co-op with the bag splitting on my wrist and found her sat on the draining board, wearing that blue headband Mrs Okafor's grandson gave her, as if she'd been invited to the Queen's garden party. Pearl was on the windowsill above her, bow still tied on, flattening her ears at the lift door every time it clanked. Fourteen floors up and they still think the whole estate belongs to them.

The butterfly came in through the balcony door the same afternoon. A grey thing with wings like old lace, it landed on the back of the sofa and Pearl watched it for an hour without blinking, not once lifting a paw. Biscuit ignored it entirely. I told the lads on the fourth floor it was a sign of something and they laughed at me, but I did not care. I have buried a husband and two budgies, and I know when something has come to sit with you.

Honest, Jean, I have been thinking about what happens when Pearl goes. The vet says she has a good year left, maybe two. Biscuit will have to learn to sleep alone, and I suppose so will I. I have cut the geraniums back and put marigold seeds in a jam jar on the sill, so something will flower in July whatever happens.

Come up at the weekend. Bring the good tea and I will show you the cats. They are not as dignified as they look in the photographs, I promise.

Love, Maureen
