Two crossed arrows on an inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of two arrows drawn in thin, even linework, one with a solid arrowhead and feathered fletching, the other with an open outline head and a boxed fletching. The arrows run diagonally across the inner forearm towards the wrist, with a few fine hatch marks along the shafts. The skin is light and the background is a dense cluster of green leaves, with the tattoo sitting centrally in the frame.

The baker's boy had been told twice to keep the ovens banked, so when the two arrows came over the wall in the grey before dawn, he was already awake and already cross. They stuck in the flour sacks by the door, one with a solid black head and feathers bound tight, the other with a hollow head like a cut-out leaf and its fletching boxed in neat, square panels.

Neither arrow was his. Down the lane the Mallory twins were sixteen and arguing about whose shot had gone further, and nobody in Cold Harbour could tell a boast from a bet. Old Ada at the mill said the bow was her husband's, and he had been dead nine winters, so the arrows had come a long way to be wrong.

The boy pulled them free and carried them to the oven, where the first loaves were rising under their cloths. He thought of burning them, but the solid one was warm from the wall, and the hollow one had a name cut into its shaft, a name that had been his grandmother's before it was anyone else's. He laid both on the coals and watched the feathers curl.

By the time the bells went, the loaves were out and the twins were at the door, pale and quiet, asking for two rolls and no questions. The boy gave them one each and kept the warm ash on his fingers, and the fire, which had kept its own counsel all night, went on burning low.
