Two dandelions with drifting seeds on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two dandelion seed heads on long, thin stems that cross below them, with several loose seeds drifting upward and to the left. The linework is fine and mostly single-weight, with small dark dots at the centre of each seed head and light stippled shading in the fluffy parts. The design is in black ink only and sits centrally on the upper back, with the person's hair visible at the top of the frame and the head cropped out.

Nell had counted the seeds on the bottom step of the caravan before the lorry came, forty-one of them stuck to the damp wood where the last rain had blown them. The ringmaster's old dog had nosed at them and sneezed. Her father, Arlo Frayne, stood at the gate of the Frayne & Sons Travelling Circus with a clipboard he no longer needed, reading out the names of the towns they would not reach before winter.

The circus had shrunk to four wagons, a striped tent patched with feed sacking, and six performers who still believed in the act. The bearded strongman had taken a job in a bakery in Stoke. The trapeze had gone to a scrapyard in Hull. Only the lioness, Duchess, remained, and she slept most afternoons under the big top with her head on a rolled canvas. In the spring Nell had taken over the seed tin, a biscuit box of paper twists labelled in her mother's looping hand: Wish, Wish, Wish.
On the last evening the wind came off the fens and lifted the tent flap. Nell carried the tin out to the field where the dandelions had gone to clock. She blew one head, then another, and watched the seeds scatter over the stubble. Her father came up behind her, breathing hard from the ladder he had been mending. "Where will they land?" he asked. "Wherever the wind is kind," she said, "or nowhere. Either way they go."
He didn't answer. He pulled the last clock from its stem, held it to his lips and blew until the seeds lifted and turned toward the road. Behind them the tent sagged, slow and tired, and Duchess coughed once in the dark. Nell kept the empty stalk in her fist all the way to the station.
