Two dot tattoos on an ear
Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Three close-up photos of one ear, with two small black dots tattooed near the upper rim. In the right-hand panels a finger pinches the lobe and fold, so the dots and skin read as a face, while the left panel shows the ear unpinched with a black plug in the lobe. The ink is solid black dots on skin, with a plain light background and a white frame around the collage.

9th October. Moored below Sonning lock with the Wren, and Aunt Hester has taken the weather badly. She sat on the cabin step all afternoon with her cardigan buttoned wrong, staring at the water as if it owed her money and she had come to collect.

Gerald, the lock keeper, came down the towpath at four with a tin of Mrs Pollard's cold tea and a bit of elm he'd whittled into a face. Two knots for eyes, a thumbprint of a mouth, and a little curled rim of wood for an ear. He pinched the lobe between finger and thumb and the mouth turned down. He let go and it looked astonished. Hester laughed for the first time since Reading, a short bark that startled a moorhen off the reeds.
The face lives on the tiller shelf now. Each morning someone pinches it into a new expression: Monday cross, Tuesday sorry, today a sort of wide-eyed hope that Hester insists is Gerald's own. She says the trick is that the dots never move. Only the skin around them does the talking, and you can make a whole sermon out of a fold.
I told her most people are like that, a pair of eyes and whatever the world does to the edges. She pinched the face at me, mouth pulled down, and I had to go up on deck to hide my own.
