Small rainbow arc tattoo on an ear
Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo
A close-up of an ear showing a small rainbow arc tattooed along the upper edge of the ear, in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple bands. The linework is fine and the colour is soft and slightly blurred at the edges, with no shading. A white plug earring with a clear stone sits in the lobe, and a green fabric is out of focus at the top of the frame.

Dear Nell, the rain has finally stopped, so I can write without the ink running off the page. You will not believe what the wind brought in this morning. I climbed the north tower with the flask and the bad biscuits, and there it was over the broken keep, a rainbow so low it seemed to be resting one end on the moat.

Mr Pryce from the village says the arc always comes after a wet week in April, and that the old lords once had their shields painted to match it. I told him that was nonsense, but I stood there long enough for my tea to go cold. The colours were thinner than I expected, the red nearly pink where the sun caught the wet stone, and the violet fading out at the edge like a bruise going down.
I have decided not to sell the cottage after all. Mr Pryce has promised to show me where the chapel floor was, and there are stones in the ditch with letters I want to copy out for you. You always said I never finish anything. I am finishing this one.
Before I came down, I looked for the arc again and it had gone. But on the lowest step of the tower a puddle had caught the last of the light, and in it every band was still there, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and that deep purple, all lying flat in one small pool. Write soon, and tell me if the rain has reached you too.
