Two feathers on a wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows a hand with two separate black feather designs on the wrist, one above the other and angled diagonally. The feathers are drawn with fine, delicate linework and small areas of solid black shading along their spines. The ink is the only colour against the pale skin and plain off-white background, so the composition keeps the focus on the tattoos.

Dear Tom,

The big top came down on Tuesday in Shrewsbury, and the rain has not let up since. Mr Pargeter sold the elephant to a farm near Ludlow, and the menagerie wagons sit on blocks behind the field with their doors hanging open. We have eleven performers left and one tent, patched in three colours, that drips over the flying rig like a sieve.

The feathers are what I want to tell you about. You will remember the Bird Girls act, the costumes Mother stitched in '58 from pheasant and goose quill, the ones that took four hours to pin on. Most of them went to the rag man on Saturday for four shillings a bundle. But I kept back the grey ones with the split spines, because Lottie wouldn't let me throw them out. She said a feather that has done its work deserves a proper end.

So I have spent the evening at the kitchen table with my needle and a spool of black thread, binding two of the best quills to a scrap of ribbon, their tips pointing down like a pair of swallows on a wire. Lottie says it is foolish. I told her a seamstress is allowed one foolish thing before the lights go out.

I am posting them with this letter. Do not open the envelope in the post office, Tom. Keep them somewhere the damp cannot reach, and when you are next in a town with a proper winter, climb somewhere high and let the wind have them.

Your loving sister, Ada
