Two fine line elephants with stars on the side

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

Two small elephants are drawn in thin, outlined linework, one in green and orange and the other in blue and orange, with a trunk curling upwards on the larger figure. Small four-pointed sparkle stars in orange, green and blue surround the elephants. The design sits on pale skin beside a navel piercing, with the composition centred on the tattoo.

The hall still smelled of floor polish and the same lukewarm squash it had smelled of in 1998. Maggie Hale stood by the trestle table holding a paper cup she had no intention of drinking, scanning the crowd for a face she only half remembered. Then she spotted Dev Lall by the window, holding a custard cream like it was evidence in a case he was losing.

They had shared the back table in Mrs Ockenden's classroom for three years, passing a single green felt tip between them and a jotter they were never supposed to doodle in. Every margin held the same pair of elephants, one bigger, one smaller, trunks curled up like question marks, surrounded by stars with four points because the cardboard stars on the reading corner had four points. "You still do the trunks like that," Dev said, before she had even reached him. "I'd know them anywhere."

She told him she had never stopped drawing them, though she had stopped showing anyone. He admitted he had kept the jotter, its cover gone soft as cloth, and that his mum had found it in a box and read the spelling mistakes aloud for a week. Neither of them had a pen. Maggie borrowed a biro from the raffle table and Dev tore a napkin into a rough square, and in the corner of a school hall, two grown adults bent over a table like it was double maths. The smaller elephant came out blue this time, since the green had run dry years ago.

When they finished, the stars were uneven and one elephant had lost its ear. Maggie folded the napkin twice and slipped it into her coat pocket, and when she finally drank the squash, it tasted of something like being nine again.
