Cat reaching for a butterfly on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line tattoo shows a seated cat with its tail curled at its base, one paw raised towards a small butterfly, with four-point sparkles and dots around them. The linework is thin, even and black, with no shading, and the design is uncoloured against pale skin. The subject fills the centre of the frame, with a checkered floor and equipment visible in the blurred background.

Dear Nana, you will not believe what Biscuit did on Tuesday. We were in the garden after tea and the sun had gone low and gold over the wall, and a butterfly came drifting past the bean poles like it had somewhere important to be. Biscuit sat up very straight, tail wrapped round her feet like a ribbon, and watched it for so long that Dad asked if she'd gone to sleep with her eyes open.

Then she lifted one paw, slowly, the way you reach for a biscuit when you're not supposed to have one, and she went on reaching. The butterfly went up and down over her head, and every time it dipped towards her paw she shut her eyes and smiled, as if she already had it and was just being polite about it. Little sparkles kept appearing in the air around them, though Dad says that was just the dust catching the light off the greenhouse, and I have decided not to believe him.

She never caught it. I want you to know that. But when the butterfly finally fluttered off over the fence, Biscuit stayed exactly where she was with her paw still in the air, and she looked so pleased with herself that I think she had caught it after all, just in a different way. I asked her what she'd got and she just blinked at me, slow, the way cats do when they've decided you are not clever enough to understand. Come and see her when you're back from the coast. She's saving the good view for you.

Love, Ellie x
