Giraffe and monarch butterfly on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A giraffe's head and neck are shown in profile, reaching upwards, with a monarch butterfly perched on the tip of its muzzle. The giraffe has detailed shading in tan and brown with darker spots, and the eye and ear are rendered with soft highlights. The orange and black wings of the butterfly provide the main accent colour against the warm brown skin tones, set on a thigh photographed against dark clothing.

Tallulah the giraffe had never once looked down at the grass, so she was the last on the ridge to notice that the rains had stopped. Her world was the high canopy, the topmost shoots of the acacias above the dry riverbed, where the leaves stayed green long after everything below had turned to dust.

On the morning the monarchs came through, a single one drifted down the wind and settled on the very tip of her muzzle, as neatly as a letter on a doormat. Tallulah went cross-eyed trying to see it. She held perfectly still, though her neck ached, and the butterfly opened and closed its wings, orange and black, slow as a clock, as if it were counting something.
"You're going the wrong way," Tallulah told it, because there was nobody else on the ridge to tell. "Everyone goes south when the water goes."
The monarch did not argue. It rode there through the heat of the day while the shadows shrank under the trees. When at last the wind changed, it lifted off and turned towards the hills to the north-east, where a thin green line still showed along the rocks. Tallulah stretched her neck to its full height and watched it go. Then, because the acacia shoots were suddenly within reach, she ate the highest leaf she had ever tasted and followed the way the butterfly had pointed.
