Outlined heart with a green leaf on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A single heart is drawn in a black outline, with the upper right lobe open and a small green leaf sitting in the gap. The linework is smooth and of even weight, and the leaf is filled with flat green ink. The tattoo sits centrally on the inner wrist against a dark blue background.

The snow shut the pass on the Tuesday, and by the Thursday the inn at Hollin Gap had eaten through the good flour. You are the one who banks the range at four each morning, who knows which floorboard complains by the cellar door. Nobody else is up when the grey light comes, so you hear the tap of a cane before you see the man who owns it.

Mr Pym has been stranded since Monday with a canvas bag and a paper packet of seed he will not let out of his coat. He orders tea, then asks you, quite plainly, whether the stove keeps heat in a cupboard. You tell him it does, and he nods as though you have passed a test. "Frost takes the open ones first," he says. "Keep the lid shut and they'll wait."

Over three days you learn he is carrying cress, parsnip and a single runner bean from his late wife's garden, and that he means to plant them in a valley where nobody has grown anything since the mill closed. On the last night he takes a pencil and draws a heart on the back of a bill, leaving one side open the way a gate is left open for a deer. In the gap he sketches a leaf. "Everything needs a way out," he says, and goes up to bed.

The road opens at noon. Mr Pym is gone before the plough reaches the gate, and on the windowsill by the stove you find a saucer of wet soil with one green leaf pushing up through it, startlingly bright in the grey room. You close the firebox door softly so the warmth stays in, then crack the window just wide enough for the thaw to come through.
