Two black and grey anchor tattoos in simple solid linework sit on the inner wrists of two arms resting on a wooden floor.

Matching anchor tattoos on two wrists

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms rest side by side on a wooden floor in a black and white photograph. Each inner wrist carries a small, solid black anchor with a ring at the top, a crossbar and curved flukes, drawn in bold, even linework with little shading. The anchors are set at slightly different angles, and the soft, neutral composition keeps the focus on the tattoos.

Dear Tom,

The lift was broken again, so I carried the shopping up all fourteen floors while the wind off the Humber tried to pull the stairwell door off its hinges. Mrs Ashdown on the sixth floor says the council will paint the block grey again next spring, as if anybody ever asked for grey.

I went to the tattooist on Anlaby Road the Saturday after you sailed, the one with the cracked window and the good kettle. He asked which way the anchors should face. I said yours should lean the way the Saint Agnes leans into a swell, and mine should lean back, so that if we ever laid our arms side by side on Mum's kitchen table, the two would look like one hook pulling in opposite directions. He drew them freehand on tracing paper, bold and plain, no shading, because you said you'd rather not have the sea on you, just the anchor.

The ring on the top is where the rope goes. Mine has stayed put at home, and yesterday the ferry horn went at four and I stood at the window counting the lights on the river until the ink felt warm against the glass.

Write when you make port. Tell me which way yours is pointing when the ship comes in, and I'll tell you mine has not moved an inch.
