Small clover tattoo on an inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a four-petal clover or flower with a short stem sits on the inner wrist. The outlines are thin and the petals have light grey shading, giving a delicate, soft finish. The hand is raised against a teal background, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

Nell had the pole across her shoulders and the lock gates still groaning behind her when she saw the clover, a scrap of green pushed up through the coping stones where the mooring rings had rusted orange. Four leaves, no more, the stem bent as if it were listening. Her uncle Tomas had taught her to pick them only when a boat needed to get through something it could not see.

The fog came off the river at dusk, thick enough to swallow the bow lamp. Somewhere below Halden Lock a hire narrowboat had worked loose from its rings and was turning slowly in the current, its engine ticking as it cooled. Nell heard it before she saw it, a hollow knock of fibreglass against stone, and she followed the sound along the towpath with the clover pressed flat inside the cover of her logbook.
The boat belonged to a boy in a wax jacket who had fallen asleep over a paper map, his finger still resting on a lock he would never reach. She tied off the bow line with a bowline she had learned at nine, checked the stern, and shook him awake. He stared at her as though she were the fog itself. She opened the logbook and slid the clover out onto the chart, where it lay pale and flat against the blue of the water.
'Four leaves,' she said. 'Gets you through.' He looked at the little flower and then at her, and for once Nell did not feel the need to explain that her uncle had been wrong about most things and right about this. In the morning the fog lifted and the boy was gone, but the clover stayed on the chart, marking the bend where the current had nearly taken him.
