Ada had been counting the coins in the tin since the second field past Ely, and by the time the caravans pulled onto the common she knew the total to the penny. That summer the fair had a new ride, a wooden chair-o-plane with a painted swan at the head of every chain. Teddy Mancini ran the ticket booth and had been sweet on Ada since Whitsun. He brought her a paper cone of toffee one evening and asked whether she would read his palm. She said she didn't read palms, only her father did, and that it was a trick of lamplight and nerve. But she took his hand anyway and held it open under the bulb.
The lines were nothing special. What caught her was her own hand rising to meet his, two fingers reaching across the gap without her leave, the way a rope goes tight before anyone has pulled it. Teddy laughed. Her father stood at the tent flap with the canvas bundled under one arm and watched them without a word.
When the fair moved on at the end of the month, the booth on the far corner was already stripped to its planks. Under the saucer of her morning tea Ada found a card no bigger than a playing card. Someone had drawn two open hands on it in thin black ink, one reaching from the left and one from the right, their fingers almost touching. Beneath them, in careful capitals, was written NEXT STOP.
