Ringed skull, eye and hand on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A ringed skull sits at the top of the design, with a dashed line running down from it towards a hand that holds a small arm-like form. An open eye is drawn to the left of the skull. The work uses bold black outlines, solid black fills and little or no grey shading, on pale skin against a black and white stepped geometric background.

The rain had been coming sideways since eight, and I was still trying to sell a box of brass sextants to a man who swore he needed them for his allotment. Above the multistorey, a ringed thing hung low in the cloud, a dinner plate with a skull set in its middle, and every trader on the row had stopped to look at it. Nobody had a word for it. The fishmonger said it was a satellite. Kevin from the phone-case stall said it was a hubcap.

When the lights of the bus station flickered, the dashed line came down. It was a thin stitch of brightness, dropping from the skull to the wet cobbles beside the fish van, and where it touched, a hand made of pale light rose out of the puddles. It was not a big hand. It moved like it had done this before, sorting through the gutter, and it came up holding a wedding ring that some woman had lost an hour earlier and was still shouting about two aisles away. The hand climbed the stall legs, dropped the ring into my palm, and was gone.
An eye opened in the cloud, pale and unhurried, and looked at my stall as though it were taking inventory. I gave it the sextants for a pound, which seemed fair to both of us. The man went off happy, the woman got her ring back, and the eye drifted back under the cloud. The beam stayed where it was, a thin dashed line above my tarpaulin, and the rain stopped a hand's width short of my boxes.
