Two robots on an upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two small robot figures sit side by side on the upper arm: a larger robot on the left waves with one arm raised, and a smaller robot on the right stands with an antenna. The designs are solid silhouettes with minimal detail, filled in black and grey. The close crop shows the arm against a soft, blurred background and a black and white striped top.

Nobody had told Harold that the factory was closing, so he went on waving at the car park every morning at ten to seven, the way the foreman had set him with a spring and a dab of oil. The little one arrived in a crate stamped spares, a prototype with a bent aerial and one eye that glowed amber whenever she was thinking. Her name was painted on her base in the foreman's wobbling capitals: DOT.

Harold did not like her at first. He had been the showpiece of the Christmas range, and she was all wire and apology, forever bumping into the bench legs. But on the night shift the lights in the stores went out one by one, and it was Dot who noticed the warehouse door had been left open, her aerial trembling like a tuning fork. Harold could only wave, so he waved at the security man's torch until it swung round and found them both.
The factory shut in March. The men took their lunchboxes and their transistor radios, and the crates went off in a lorry bound for the tip. Somebody forgot to lock the yard gate, and that is how the two of them ended up on a bench by the bus shelter, Harold's arm still raised, Dot's amber light blinking slow against the wet pavement.
Every morning at ten to seven a number 14 pulled in, and the driver, who had once worked the line, lifted one hand from the wheel and waved back.
