Astronaut tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small standing astronaut in a spacesuit and helmet is tattooed on the forearm, shown in a single dark ink. The figure is shaded with mottled, textured marks that suggest worn suit fabric and light. The plain white background keeps the focus on the small, centred design.

They pulled the man out of Carrick Bay on a Tuesday, still zipped into a white suit gone grey with salt, the glass of his helmet cracked across one corner. Nobody in Hollin Quay could read the letters on his chest. Old Tam Reeve swore he had fallen off the moon, and the children believed him, because the children were always going to believe whatever kept them out of school.

Mairead Dunne, who mended the lobster pots, took the suit in hand. She stitched the tears with sail thread and patched the worst of the knees with tarred canvas, since that was all the harbour had. Every night after that the stranger walked to the end of the breakwater and stood with his back to the village, looking up. He did not look at the sea. The fishermen said the sky had already taken three of their boats, and they did not like a man who stared at it.
In October the stars came out so thick over the water that the gulls went quiet. He lifted one arm, the patched elbow catching the lamplight, and pointed at a pale spark low over the horizon. "That is the place I am from," he said. "It is nearer than you would think, from here." Mairead asked whether he meant to go back. He said he had only come down to find someone who could mend him, and that was not a thing he had expected to find in a fishing town.
Next morning the breakwater was empty and a skiff was gone from the slipway, its oars laid neatly on the stones. Nobody saw it leave. Mairead kept the spare thread in her apron pocket for the rest of her life. Years later a child found a small figure of tarred cord hanging from a nail in the chandlery, patched at one knee with sail thread, and was told never to touch it.
