Two small dog portraits on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows two small dog faces drawn in delicate, sketchy linework, one tilted upwards and the other facing the viewer. The lines are fine and loose, with soft grey shading around the ears, fur and eyes. The design is in black ink on pale skin, set against a blurred indoor background, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

Mind the step, it's loose, same as the landlady's temper. Now, the two terriers. Mrs Abernethy kept Gull's Rest on the front at Herne Bay, and her two were Pim and Sid, grey about the muzzle and never a day apart in their minds. Pim was the sort who tipped his head to the sky whenever a gull went over, as if somebody had asked him a question and he meant to answer it. Sid never looked up at anything he could look at straight on, which was most things, and the boarders said he had the better manners.

One wet Thursday in October the pair of them went missing from the back garden. Mrs Abernethy searched the sea wall with a torch and a rolled-up copy of the Gazette, calling names that carried no further than the chip shop. It was a lodger, a retired ferryman with one good ear, who found them. They were sitting on the bottom step of the lifeboat slipway, nose to nose with the tide, waiting for it to come back in and tell them where they'd put the afternoon.
Pim wouldn't come home until Sid did, and Sid wouldn't move until Pim looked at him, so the pair of them sat there till the lamps came on. The ferryman said he'd never seen two creatures so content to be lost together. He carried them both up the hill under one arm, which is no small feat, and they never once looked back at the water.
That's the whole of it. If you're wondering why the house still keeps two brass dog bowls by the door, that's Mrs Abernethy's doing, and she'd tell you the bowls were only ever for keeping the pair of them in one place.
