Two cat heads on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two cat heads in profile side by side, one turned slightly towards the other. The outlines are thin, dark and precise, with light grey shading on the fur and whiskers drawn as fine single strokes. Colour appears only in the eyes, which are green on the left cat and blue on the right, against a pale skin background.

The two cats had shared a single bowl of milk since the spring the orchard fell into the sea, and neither would drink from it unless the other was looking. Out past the salt flats, where the old road ran into the dunes, the people of Wrenhollow said the cats had been sent to keep the wells honest. Nobody remembered who had sent them.

The green-eyed one was called Tansy by the girl who kept the goats at the eastern cistern, and the blue-eyed one was called Mirrin, which was the name the tinker had given her. The tinker had gone north the winter before, leaving behind a ring of copper wire and a promise to come back for it. Tansy would sit on the cistern wall and turn her head whenever the wind carried a sound from the road, and Mirrin would turn hers a moment later, as if she had heard it first and only wanted to be sure.

In the ninth month of the drought a rider came up the road with a sack of seed and a letter sealed in red wax. The girl read it aloud at the well while the cats watched from the wall. It said the seed was for whoever kept the water, and that the water would be kept only so long as the cats were fed. The girl laughed, then stopped, because Tansy had leapt down and walked straight to the rider's horse and sat before it, unblinking, until the animal lowered its head.

That evening the seed went into the ground at the eastern cistern, and when the first green shoots came up, Mirrin was seen sleeping curled against the cistern's stone, her blue eyes shut for the first time anyone could recall. Tansy kept watch alone, the way the tinker had said she always would, with her head tilted just so towards the empty road.
