Small cat head on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small cartoon cat head sits on the inner forearm, drawn in a thin black outline with a white face, orange patches over the ears and top of the head, green eyes and a pink nose. The linework is clean and even, and the colour is applied flatly with soft shading only at the edges of the orange areas. The tattoo is centred on a plain, pale arm against a dark, blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pass me that ladle, and mind the pot, because the cat won't stand for scorched barley. Her name was Marmalade, though the purser called her Captain, which tells you what he knew about cats. She was white from her nose to her chest, with a sandy cap over her ears like she'd dipped her head in the stove, and eyes so green the second mate swore she could see the weather through them.

That spring we ran into a blow off the Scillies that had the whole crew on their knees by the rail. Every bucket in the galley slid to leeward, and the biscuit tins walked themselves across the deck. I'd lashed the flour and was swearing at the kettle when Marmalade sat up on the bread bin, pink nose twitching, and looked at me the way the bosun looks at a man who is about to be wrong. So I left the pots and followed her down to the hold with a lantern, her tail up like a flag the whole way.

Wedged between two water casks we found the ship's boy with a broken wrist, too frightened to shout. We got him up the ladder just as the bow came round, and the cat walked the length of the galley ahead of us as if she'd arranged the whole business herself. When the sun came out over Falmouth she was asleep on my chart with one orange ear flat to the paper, and nobody had the heart to move her.

We put in at Bristol a week later, and she jumped off the gangway without a backward look. Months on, I saw a cat in a shop window on Park Street with the same white face and the same green eyes. I'd swear she winked at me, but the woman behind the glass said the kitten had no name yet.
