Two small faces tattooed on adjacent fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two adjacent fingers are shown from the palm side, each with a simple black tattoo. One finger has a smiling face with dot eyes and a curved mouth, while the other has closed eyes and a pair of thin, stick-like arms reaching across. The linework is fine and even on pale skin, and the image is in black ink only, against a blurred indoor background.

Ned climbed the slip with the sea running out of his boots and found Ada waiting with her hand held up. She had dipped her fingers in the chandler's ink and drawn the little faces again, one grinning, one dozing with its arms out wide. He looked at them for a long while.

"You kept watch," he said. "Somebody had to," she said, "and you were always going to fall asleep first."
