Smiley faces on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two simple smiley faces with small arms linking them are tattooed in black line on the sides of two adjacent fingers. The linework is thin and even, with the faces drawn as plain circles with dot eyes and curved smiles. A thin silver ring sits on one of the middle fingers, and the hands are shown in close, soft-focus framing against a neutral background.

Ivy and Margaret Dunn had fallen out over a borrowed bicycle in the spring of 1953, and by August they were not speaking across the length of Church Lane. Their mother put up with it for three weeks. On the fourth morning she found them both in the wash-house at dawn, sharing one stub of indelible pencil.

They had drawn faces on their fingers, two grinning circles with dot eyes, and joined them with a squiggle of arms. "Pact," Ivy said, without looking up. "Whoever breaks it first walks to Ashby for the milk." Margaret said nothing, but held up her own hand so the two smiles sat side by side on the first two fingers, leaning in as if about to whisper.
It was a foolish bargain and it took most of a week to wear off, the ink fading faster on the knuckles than on the nails. Each morning they woke and checked, and each morning the faces had shrunk a little, still touching. Ivy found it harder than she expected to walk past the bicycle in the lean-to without asking to ride it.
On the Saturday the milk ran out. Neither of them moved. Their mother set the teapot between them and said nothing, and when Margaret finally reached for the bread she caught Ivy's hand instead, and the two faint smiles met over the crust. "You owe me the milk," Ivy said. "You owe me the bicycle," said Margaret, and neither of them let go to fetch either.
