Mab Corran and her younger brother Tobias were nine and eleven the winter the Sorrel went onto the Teeth. They had watched the lamp from the gallery every night since their father took the post, and they knew the light only held the boats if somebody wiped the glass before dusk. When the ink ran out, they made more from lamp soot, a spoon of linseed and a darning needle heated over the wick. Mab pricked the anchor onto Tobias's finger first, then he did hers, because a thing only counts if both sides bear it.

Their mother called it nonsense, a wicked thing to do to a child's skin. She still sent them up to wipe the glass every dusk, and when the Sorrel's crew came ashore on a rope knotted from bedsheets, it was Mab who held the line while Tobias hauled. Nobody thanked the children. The sea was too loud for thanks.

Years later Tobias shipped out on the Sorrel's sister vessel, and only the sister vessel came home. Mab climbed to the gallery alone and polished the glass until the cloth came away grey, the little anchor on her finger the only steady thing in that cold room. The light turned, the boats came in, and she kept it turning until morning. That is all of it. Mind the stove on your way out.
